The Toymaker Holds Auditions for 2009 NYMF Production

The Toymaker team is excited to get casting underway for the upcoming production.  A Non-Equity Open Call is being held on July 21st for several NYMF shows including The Toymaker.  The Equity Principal Audition (EPA) is being held at Actor's Equity on Wednesday, July 29th in combination with 4 other NYMF shows.

Here is the breakdown for the show:

When Sarah’s marriage falls apart after 2 failed pregnancies, stories of a childless toymaker of the past propel her on a desperate search spanning the globe & time itself. In this tale of enduring passion & hope, Sarah's quest to find a missing toy & solve the mysteries of a village destroyed by war lead her to a destiny of fulfillment she once thought impossible.

Sarah Meeks: Woman, mid 30s. Warm, relatable, compassionate; has channeled her marital frustrations & difficulties conceiving a child into a worldwide search for a unique toy. In the process, she ventures outside her suburban comfort zone & affects lives of those around her. Dynamic acting role. She guides us thru the story. Excellent soprano w/strong belt/mix.

Anna Klimes: Woman, mid 30s. Petr’s wife, living in Czechoslovakia in 1942. Once-strong, earthy woman, losing faith and worn down by life. Preferably on the taller side; also open to various physical types. Mezzo w/strong belt.

Jason Meeks: Man, mid 30s. Sarah’s husband (present day). Distant but caring. Always wanted children; frustrated w/their difficulties conceiving. Tenor to high A (both full-voice & floated).

Doby: Seeking actor 18+ to believably play 16. Male. Mischievous, intelligent contemporary Czech street urchin. Preferably 5’6” or under. Dancer. Youthful tenor.

Capek: Seeking actor 18+ to believably play 14. Male. Simple orphaned boy. Assists Petr w/toy-making. Preferably 5’6” or under. Youthful tenor to high A.

Johanna: Woman, 50s - 60s. Reclusive puppeteer in Germany. Passionate to the point of eccentricity. Wounded beneath the façade. Mezzo.

Uta: German woman, 80s. Blind. Once a matron at Ravensbrück. Harbors a dark secret that has plagued her for many years. Strong character mezzo.

Young Johanna: Seeking actress 18+ to play a teen. Pure, sweet, warm, inviting. Girlish, petite. Preferably under 5’2”. Youthful soprano w/lilting quality.

Capek Liska: Man, 70s - 80. Capek as an older man. Must learn to speak realistic Czech. Strong singer; emerges from the company.

Men: Various ages. Variety of speaking & singing roles including Capek Liska’s son, villagers, German police etc. Strong singers, comfortable w/movement.

Women: Various ages. Variety of speaking & singing roles including villagers, women of Ravensbrück, etc. Strong singers, comfortable w/movement.

Petr Klimes: CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Man, mid 30s. The Toymaker. Czech farmer and ex-mine worker who lives in Lidice in 1942. Physically imposing but warm, mild-mannered and paternal. Strong baritone with a wide range. Low A to high A.
